When I was in first grade, my mom bought me the Harry Potter series because I was a little nearsighted nerd with a hyperactive imagination. As a little kid, I became obsessed with magic, spells, Hermione, and broomsticks. They were real in my mind and no one could convince me that my friends at Hogwarts were brilliantly conjured up by J.K. Rowling. I knew I was secretly a witch, and I held on to that knowledge for years.
My eleventh birthday was the day I learned the truth about myself. I don’t recall the presents I got or if I had a party or what kind of cake I had that day, but I do remember expecting my Hogwarts letter to show up any minute. Have you ever told yourself, “I’ll lose weight after my daughter gets married,” or “I’ll start exercising once this stressful project at work is over!”? Life is busy, and it is HARD to make your health a priority sometimes!
However, there are a lot of downsides to procrastinating a workout for days…or months. Soon it catches up to you and your metabolism slows wayyyy down. You find yourself feeling sluggish, heavy, and sad. Exercise releases endorphins, and when you don’t get them from a workout, your body craves them from other places. Like chocolate. That chocolate makes it even harder to work out, and it becomes a messy cycle, you see?
Personally, I am an excellent pusher-backer of healthy habits. A morning workout? After being up all night with a fussy newborn? No thanks! And it’s much easier to ask my husband to grab fast food on his way home instead of finding time to meal plan and make a dinner with some nutrition.
The thing is, I realized that when I put off taking care of my body until life gets easier, life only gets harder. It might take some planning, but I realized that by figuring out small ways to take care of myself throughout the day, I am a better mom, a more productive worker, a more understanding wife, and a happier person.
It doesn’t take much. Sometimes it’s just making myself drink water throughout the day! The point is, life will always be busy. If you make healthy habits foundations of your day, things that you can rely on even when everything else gets crazy, your body will stay strong even during pressure.

Have you ever entered a weight loss competition? Maybe an office-wide “Biggest Loser” challenge, or a friendly wager with your significant other? Perhaps your competitor doesn’t even know the rivalry exists! I’ll admit it—sometimes I push myself a little longer on the elliptical just to show up the person next to me.
A lot of people think that competition is a great motivator, and one of those short-term contest might just give you short-lived weight loss. However, pushing yourself to surpass someone else in a pound-for-pound competition is never a good idea!
Your body is DIFFERENT than everyone else’s! That means that your weight loss will happen at a different rate in different amounts and in different areas! Trying to match someone else’s weight loss goals can be unrealistic and even discouraging. Your body is totally unique, so don’t try to mold it into something it’s not!
The ideal plan is to try and become your best self. Figure out the body fat percentage at which you feel your healthiest and make that your goal. Work towards wearing your favorite pair of jeans again—it’s much more satisfying than fretting about your gym partner’s progress!
