We’ve all been there. A neighbor, sister-in-law, or friend decides to go running for a few weeks and magically drops 15 pounds. A co-worker stops drinking soda and suddenly loses his giant gut. Your spouse lays off refined sugar and slims down, no problem. Other people’s success can be really frustrating—especially when nothing works for you!
You’ve probably tried the diets, the gyms, the supplements and all that other stuff that’s supposed to make you look great, but really ends up frustrating you. Here’s why nothing has worked so far:
- You are unique. If you try a one-size-fits-all diet, you will not see success. Imagine a 14-year-old girl and a college football player eat the same way. Either the teenager would balloon up or the linebacker would starve. No wonder Nutrisystem didn’t work for you! You’re not the same as everyone else, and you shouldn’t eat that way either.
- You can’t trust “healthy” food. When I was way overweight, my mom would always make brown rice and grind her own wheat for bread because she thought it was so much better for me. While I do appreciate her good intentions, that stuff is loaded with carbs and is the OPPOSITE of slimming! If you’re eating “diet” food that’s really just excess carbohydrates, you’re only adding to the problem.
- You’re exercising too hard. Yes, you heard me right. Just because you’re sweaty and out of breath doesn’t mean you got a great workout! Your body burns fat best in your target heart rate zone, and it’s usually a lot lower than you think. Once you’re out of that zone, you’re working for free, my friend.
- Your hormones might be whack. Especially as you age, your hormone levels with fluctuate all over the place. This can lead to some serious weight gain, especially if your cortisol levels are high (hello high-stress!). Messed up hormones are literally like locking the weight loss gate. As soon as you can balance yourself out, you’ll be amazed at how easily the pounds can come off.
- You’re not getting enough protein. If you don’t know how much protein your body requires, chances are you’re not getting enough. In order to properly maintain your muscle mass and lose weight, you’ve got to up your protein intake and drop your carbs. Toss the potato chips and break out the barbecue, am I right?
- You’ve got unknown food allergies. Ok, this might throw you off, but a lot of people have food allergies that they don’t even know about! For example, my dad found out he was lactose intolerant in his 40’s. Once he went off the dairy, his inflammation went way down and he was able to lose the weight!
- You’re not measuring correctly. The scale and your BMI tell you whether you’re in shape or not, right? Wrong! The scale can only measure gravity’s pull on you toward the earth. It doesn’t measure your body fat percentage, your lean tissue mass, or your hydration levels! By getting a scale that helps you keep track of those levels, you have a more accurate idea of what’s going on in your body and what progress you’ve made. - You’re trying to do it all on your own. Losing weight is a big change! It calls for a lot of hard work and accountability. If you don’t have a good support system there to help you, you might fall off the wagon and revert back to harmful behaviors.
